System at Zalaegerszeg WWTP that will convert biogas into transport fuel (25-5-2010)
Zalaegerszeg waste-water treatment plant in western Hungary with a system that will
convert biogas into transport fuel.
The plant will be capable of generating a “maximum of around 50 litres of diesel equivalents
per hour,” said Robert Lems, research and development manager of DMT, and the fuel will
be used “for the company’s own fleet of cars”.
Lems said that the demonstration plant should be operational by June this year and that
WWTP cars using the biodiesel should be running from July. The fuel produced will be
sufficient to drive 10 cars per day, five days a week.
At present WWTP uses the biogas from its digesters for combined heat and power, said a
statement, and the addition of DMT’s technology will now enable the conversion of the
biogas into vehicle fuel.
The total investment for the "biogas upgrading and fuel station expansion" is around EUR
450,000 (USD 601,532), said Lems.
According to a company statement "this will be the first unique demonstration project in
Hungary for making vehicle fuel out of biogas".
